Hi there! Nice to meet you

I am a professional, qualified and certified tour guide and have made it my mission to show visitors to Berlin sights, sites, monuments and places which they may otherwise miss, as navigating Berlin can be a challenge due to its sheer size, and since Berlin, in my opinion, is a city that is easily 'misunderstood'. I've been working as a tour-guide ever since I returned from having lived abroad (UK, France) for close to 16 years. While living in the UK, I gained a Master's Degree at Bath University and a PhD at the prestigious University of Warwick. The topics of both my MA and my PhD dissertations revolve around the Holocaust, which is why Holocaust and Third Reich History are my particular field of expertise. Following my return, I had to practically rediscover Berlin anew as so much of it had changed. The constant changes Berlin undergoes, however, make it a fascinating place to visit. But it is exactly that which also make it a challenge to the casual tourist, not to mention tour operators and travel book publishers as they have to edit their Berlin edition every so often, with new museums, sights, and monuments being built on a constant basis.

The tours I offer here will take you around Berlin - by foot and by underground - in just under four hours, introducing you to the many faces and facets you never knew Berlin had, including Germany's oldest mosque, a pretty little square which the New York Times called "one of Europe's prettiest", one of Europe's most beautiful subway lines (and stations!), Berlin's second oldest Jewish cemetery, the location of the first victim of the infamous Berlin Wall, a former bunker that's been turned into luxury apartments, a synagogue of which only a fraction survived the pogroms of Nov 9, 1938 but which may soon be rebuilt, a wild Turkish market which really is as much Indian and African as it is Turkish, an area that went from no-go-area to hip-and-trendy, David Bowie's Berlin home in the 1970s, and so on. ... ... Curious? Join me!

A terrific tour. Communication with Martin before and during the tour was first rate. His command of English is impeccable. He’s also fluent in French, which we are not, but it was sure nice to hear German and French place names pronounced in accordance with the language of their origin. Martin was well prepared with before images of the places we visited. Of course he was very knowledgeable as well. He also took the extra step of cross referencing the places we visited to lyrics in Bowie songs on an ongoing basis, which was very insightful. Other reviewers noted how the tour was a great way to see Berlin. They were right. I like David Bowie. My partner is a huge fan. The tour suited us both. We saw numerous neighborhoods that were really wonderful (regardless of your musical taste), but not on our itinerary. Thanks to Martin, we visited them feeling like locals, which instilled us with an even greater appreciation of Berlin.A Highlight of Our Berlin Visit

You can see Mr. Martin’s respect for his clients and his work through his appropriate attire and well-groomed appearance. We had a wonderful and productive 3.5 hours together. It goes without saying that he is knowledgeable and articulate, but beyond that, he is also a great listener — open-minded, candid, and genuinely interested in hearing from people of all backgrounds. Mr Martin is a chivalrous gent. Join his tour — you’ll have a great time!A gentleman of our time

We had the most special 3 hour tour with Martin booked by our friend Alan. We loved that Riley joined us and that we saw Berlin through the eyes of a local. Recent and older history was covered in an informative and interesting way. Certainly thought provoking and all our questions were well answered. We would certainly ask Martin to be our guide again! An amazing tour with Martin!

We really enjoyed our time with Martin. The subway tour gave us a different starting point for looking at local history. The stops were interesting as were our outside exploration. The small group, just us made this a conversation, not just a lecture. We would do another tour (with Martin) when we return. David & JohanneSubways with Martin

Martin is an outstanding guide who knows a lot about the history of Berlin in general and especially about the Jewish part. We had a great morning walking around and being informed in such an interesting way. We really enjoyed his explanation. Thanks Martin! Hope to see you once more when we will visit Berlin.
