My wife and I recently had the pleasure of taking a private two-hour food tour with Otto in the neighborhood near the Begijnhof, and it was an absolute highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. Otto went above and beyond to tailor the experience to our dietary preferences and interests, making us feel like the tour was truly crafted just for us.
From the start, Otto was personable, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable about Amsterdam’s history and culinary traditions. His passion for the city and its food scene was infectious, and his easy-going demeanor made the tour feel like an afternoon spent with a friend.
Since we had expressed a desire to limit carbohydrates and weren’t overly enthusiastic about candy, Otto made thoughtful adjustments to the typical group itinerary. He selected stops that offered a fantastic variety of local specialties and even included a coffee shop café in honor of our background in the coffee business. Over the course of the tour, we visited seven unique stops, each offering something delicious and memorable:
• Fresh raw herring and smoked eel: The smoked eel was hands down the star of the tour—unbelievably flavorful and a perfect taste of Dutch tradition.
• Pea soup at a pub: Hearty, comforting, and quintessentially Dutch.
• Brazilian café for coffee and Pão de Queijo: As coffee enthusiasts, we loved this unexpected stop. The cheese bread bites were warm and delightful.
• Local Dutch Gouda cheese: A must-try and perfectly curated by Otto.
• Peppernuts: A crunchy, spiced treat that gave us a taste of the Netherlands’ love for seasonal flavors.
• Stroopwafel: Though we’re not big on sweets, this was an undeniable classic.
Throughout the tour, Otto seamlessly wove in fascinating tidbits about Amsterdam’s history, from its humble beginnings to its vibrant present. His storytelling added so much depth to the experience, making it more than just a food tour—it was a cultural deep dive. He pointed out small, easy to miss things, like brass bricks laid in honor of Jewish families who were taken and murdered in concentration camps.
Another thing we appreciated was how resourceful Otto was in helping us plan the rest of our day. After the tour, he gave us excellent recommendations for unique things to do in the area, which we eagerly took advantage of.
This was a completely different experience from what you’d get in a group setting. Otto’s ability to adapt the tour to our preferences, his deep knowledge, and his genuine love for connecting with guests made this one of the best tours we’ve taken.
If you’re looking for a personalized and enriching way to experience Amsterdam’s food and culture, do yourself a favor and hire Otto. You won’t regret it!Otto’s Private Amsterdam Food Tour

We had a wonderful personalized tour! We covered many topics including the general history, social history, recreational marijuana and psychedelic truffle history and legalization. He took us to pubs and little eateries to try the local herring, hot food dispensers, and local shops that were perfect for our tastes. Thank you for the wonderful welcome to Amsterdam!Highly recommend
Zoe took over because Otto wasn't available. He was very communicative about being unavailable, and she was so great. She took care of our little Emmy and was just perfect all around. Thank you!A wonderful backup
