Raffaele

I'm a Neapolitan Archaeologist with 14 years of field experience on my neck and I am an Official Tour Guide of the Campania Region. I have a degree in Archaeology, a master in Classical Archaeology and a Ph.D. in Archeological Heritage -with a project on a Pompeii's roman building.

I did my FIRST archaeological excavation at POMPEII and since 2008 I have been part of an International Team of Archaeologists where we found a Roman bath in an area of the Vesuvius never discovered before (Apolline Project); my love for history brought me to many dig sites around Italy (Rome, Molise, Etruria) and since the 2015 I am Archaeologist Member of the Vatican Team Commission for Archaeology in particular for the excavations of the Catacomb of Naples (St. Gennaro).

- March 2021 I discovered a roman villa built outside the city walls of the ancient Pompeii.

- The municipality of City of Pompeii has awarded me the Prize for 'great and honorable guide' (Oct 2019)

- In December 2021 the Nobel Prize Prof. Mario Capecchi was on a tour of the Archaeological Museum of Naples with me.

- In September 2019 the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2011 Dr. B. Beutler was with me for a tour of Pompeii.

Also, I am working as researcher on an archaeological excavation here in Naples (the underground of Naples is an amazing world!) and you can find my published research papers about Pompeii or Naples on Academia edu under my name. Since I was a child, I have always loved the ancient history of Greece and Rome as well as art from the Middle Ages to the 20th (1900s).

Raf was great. He thoroughly engaged us as a family of four, including our two girls of 14 and 11. He communicated well when booking via WithLocals and in preparation/on the day for meeting up! He was not patronising at all and taught us all so much and we knew a bit before visiting. He was keen to answer all our questions and the 3 hour tour was perfectly broken with chances to sit and talk rather than constant walking/talking. Also took us to Villa dei Mystiere as we had the Plus tickets. He seemed to enjoy that as much as we did! Thanks Raf for a fun time and for making a visit to Pompeii as great as we hoped it would be!!R

Raffaele was an excellent guide. He took us to the most interesting parts of Pompeii and we really learned what life was like in the city 2000 years ago. Through his descriptions of the volcano eruption stages he enabled us to feel what the citizens experienced. The tour through the museum was equally as valuable. thank you Raffaele, we highly recommend others tour with you!Fabulous experience

My family and I couldn’t have imagined a better experience! Raffaele was in touch with us days before we traveled to Rome and helped us with travel logistics to meet him at Pompeii and the Museum. He tailored his presentation perfectly to our teenage boys and answered every question they had. Raffaele’s expert level of knowledge about the history of ancient Italy and his engaging personality made this tour the most memorable part of our vacation! Fantastic experience!

Raffaele was the ultimate in punctual, prepared, and very warm and entertaining. His knowledge and credentials are excellent, and he steered us to all of the best that a day trip to Capri can offer.
