We thoroughly enjoyed our walking local food tour with Ryuki. He took us to some delicious local places and was enthusiastic to share local food flavors and specialties with us. Ryuki is knowledgeable about the area and answered our food questions. He also gave us recommendations for places to go by ourselves on another day. Ryuki, was a late stand-in for our selected guide Guia who was unavailable for our tour. Ryuki was an enthusiastic tour guide who introduced us to some hidden gems of Kyoto around the Gion region. He is a local born guy who had some interesting facts and history of the area and the sights we visited. It was a wet day but we pressed on and saw Kodaiji Temple, Yasaka Shrine where we were introduced to the prayer technique of a Shrine vs a Temple. We passed through Shimokawaracho area and the bamboo gardens. Ryuki, took many photos for us which used techniques on the iPhone that were new to us - with some impressive results. The stroll down Ninen-zaka Path was colourful in the rain and passed the Hokan-ji Temple. In all an interesting introduction to some of the history and culture of Kyoto. Holy WOW! Ryuki pretty much MADE our trip to Japan. Our tour was in Kyoto - 8 hours! He worked with us on an itinerary for the day and helped us streamline what would flow best. It was HOT HOT August and Ryuki was great about doing outside activities followed by rest for a cool drink or a meal. As well, he made sure we were well hydrated. But that's beside the point - the behind-the-scenes... off the beaten path - boy did he DELIVER ! Secret spots, easy access, he thought ahead and was ready for every eventuality. And Ryuki is a FOODIE, much to our delight. Keeping the American palate in mind, he took us to spots only the "locals" know about. One of the highlights was a local sushi place that was ah-mazing and super affordable. And Ryuki knows his historical facts. Fun, interesting and charming - he was terrific. Finally - do I need to say it? Having Ryuki navigate the day was SUCH a relief. No google maps for us! We just followed him along in various transportation, allowing us to soak in the beauty and ambiance of Kyoto. If we come back to Japan, Ryuki is our man! FIVE STARS! I would give 6 if / could ! Our Kyoto guide, Ryuki from City Unscripted, was superb! A true 10 out of 10! His knowledge of the city and its historical sites was exactly what we hoped for. His great knowledge included off the beaten path experiences (including a hidden bamboo grove and several dynamite restaurants) that added a real personal feel and magic to the whole day. And his enthusiasm for showing his guests a really good time could not have been more genuine, more helpful, and more infectious. If you are so lucky to be assigned Ryuki for your Kyoto walking tour, you're in for an experience that you'll never forget.
