Ronnie (Sum Pui) was very thorough and knowledgeable about the history of Hong Kong island, focussed on the areas around Sheung Wan and Soho. We thoroughly enjoyed the explanations around the many stores selling fish products, the history of the 'ding ding', the traditions of yum cha (which we took part in) and the crossover between British colonial influence and Chinese history. Ronnie was very generous with his time and no time did we feel rushed. This did feel like a tour with a local and not what you would get on a tour bus.Sum Pui the enthusiast!!

Throughly enjoyed our food tour with Sum Pui! The food choices were excellent and varied and were thoroughly enjoyed by all in our group! The “bonus” were the cultural sites that Sum Pui took us by including several temples, a quick tour of the original Hong Kong Prison, and a ride on the longest outdoor escalator in the world. Sum Pui was also more than willing to share his views on the development of modern Hong Kong as well as developments across the world. We have done food tours in multiple countries across Europe but this was excellent!More Then A Food Tour

Sum, aka Ronnie, was a great tour guide! As a journalist for his other job he was able to give me a great explanation of the history of Hong Kong. We tried an authentic dim sum restaurant/ tea house that has one of the six remaining dim sum carts in Hong Kong. It was truly a place for locals and he explained every dish and the experience of yum cha. We walked the streets around Hong Kong island and he explained the dried food shops. He pointed out many things while we walked around and was very informative. He jokes a lot so make sure you have a sense of humor! We stumbled upon a tattoo shop as I was explaining how much I missed my dog and that I wanted a tattoo of him. I decided on the spot to get a tattoo there and luckily they had a time slot after the tour. He even stayed with me to keep me company during my tattoo! Thank you for such a great day and an experience I will never forget!! Gong hei fat choy! Fantastic Hong Kong tour!!

Sum Pui’s tour secrets of Kowloon promised to show us the othe, less glitzy side of Hong Kong, where ordinary people lived. Sun Pui is knowledgeable, energetic an devote to educating his guests on the complex social background of his hometown, of which he is justly proud. He met guided us from the Marriott lobby to the MTR to a Kowloon’s San Wai estate housing in Shek Kip Mei Estate Hong Kong built in 1953 after a fire destroyed the neighborhood of migrants from the mainland. It’s been completely redeveloped and looks almost new. These housing estates built by the Brits in the 50s and 60s, and now in the process of renovation for select low income HK residents and merchants . Nearby, another older complex is being renovated and sits empty behind bar wire, surrounded construction sheds, a few scraps of forgotten or discarded laundry clinging to its balconies. We then visited tht Tai Hang Estate, a w rise complex. Its markets are vibrant and stocked with delicious vegetables and even some live chickens, frogs and fish. There are play yards, sports courts interspersed with the residences, which are midrise apartment blocks whose balconies are draped with drying laundry. The apartments and public spaces are inviting and well maintained, and in the shops and restaurants everything is half the price in subsidized Kowloon than in the Admiralty. This subsidized enclave contrasts with its overcrowded, neighbor, where market rents are double for inferior flats, and the markets are more desperate: commerce trades in second hand shoes, obsolescent electronics, used power drills, it seems impossible, but the impoverished neighborhood seems safer than LA, or even Bangkok, and boasts dynamite noodle shops with Michelin street food accolades. The Catholic church is surprisingly prominent in Hong Kong despite its British Protestant influences and mainland Chinese influences. He pointed us to the Man Kei Card noodle shop where we enjoyed delicious noodles recommended by Michelin

Thanks for taking me, despite Chinese New Year, to the " other" side of Hongkong. In this tour do not expect the "beautiful" nor the "rich" side of the city you will see the everday live of migrant wokers and other lower income people who have a significant role to play in the city. Thanks for this important insight. The unknown Hongkong

Sum Pui is a great guide very talkative, fun and well informed. I loved the trip though Kowloon, the ride with the tram. He took extra time, he adjusted the programme to show me the Tai Kwun. He took me to the pier to make sure I get the boat correctly. Thanks for everything.Go for it!

Would highly recommend this tour. Ronnie (Sum Pui) is an incredible guide. Not only is he knowledgeable about the street food scene in Hong Kong but he is also a great source of information regarding Hong Kong. We learnt a lot on this tour, we walked through various markets and above all we ate a lot of good food!An incredible guide to a beautiful city

Ronnie and Carrie were very prompt and professional, took us to three Kowloon street food establishments…none of the food was to our liking. We told Ronnie and he tried to explain that street food is not like traditional Chinese food. He kept asking what we would like and we really had a hard time explaining it so we ended the tour early. I think they really tried to give us an authentic street food experience and we just did not enjoy the food itself. Ronnie helped us get on the metro and we thanked him for his efforts. If you are very adventurous and would like new experiences with very unexpected flavors, this tour might be for you.Hong Kong St., Food tour review
